July: Weed power versus people power !

An interesting gourd... Wait util it grows to its full size. Its is called  squash tromboncino.

Winter squash or is it summer squash ? I should know, as I planted it but I cannot remember

Ah, and courgettes...

This looks strange. Yes you may have guessed that under the net we have sweet corn

Each year I grow sweet corn. As soon as the cobs begin to grow some predator gets at it, even peels the husk and gets to the corn. So this year I decided to put a net over these tall plants. I wonder if the corona the cob will survive ?

We have more courgettes and few yellow raspberries and blackberries

What beautifully scents, plant and gorgeous flowers. This is bergamot...
Not sure what use I can put this to, apart just enjoying its fragrance and the lovely shaped flowers

Here we have artichokes now in full bloom, great for bees

This was huge strawberry bed, covered in strawberries and then nothing. Before they ripened all the strawberries just disappeared, despite the net I had put over them. Now the strawberry plants are covered in weeds. This is a job waiting to be done. The idea is to dig out all the strawberry plants and use the runners to start a new bed. Then of course weed the whole of this huge bed.

We have got more slabs...GREAT, we can now lay them around the edge of our garden, to stop the weeds taking over that side path

Hopefully will control some of the weed power

July 16th

More Courgettes, More Beetroot and More Weeds

Courgettes

Weeds out ...

July 6th-12th

Courgettes and Broad Beans, harvest and weeds

Courgette

Many courgettes plants were killed bythe late frost this year. A few survived, and today our first courgette is ready for picking

Broad beans. Just like last year, they got infested with black fly, so it's time to pull them all out. I will not bother with planting them again

Spinach bed, not looking good

The pea bed. The plants have all died as they have been taken over by weeds

Cleared all the weeds. Looks good, but for how long ?

Beetroot: yellow ones too...

and weeds

Tomato plants doing ok

Rhubarb doing well

The Beauty of Nature

Last year a whole load of poppies just sprung up. This year one whole bed was just covered in poppies, so we left them to brighten the garden.

The artichokes turning purple. Soon we shall have beautiful purple flowers

The beetroot is ready for harvesting. Today's harvest

We had pea plants here doing so well. Then after a lot of rain and lots of sunshine, the pea plants were all taken over by the weeds.

June 22nd

Weeds, Seeds and Artichokes

The weeds seem to take over everywhere. I am sure this is the worse year for weeds. I do not remember it this bad in the past.

Artichokes are just flourishing

Just love the way they open up, so big, so strong

Soon a beautiful purple flower will take centre stage

 Rhubarb

 Fennel gone to seed

Spinach gone to seed

The spinach has gone wild and whole plants just turned to seed. Amazing how much seed there is...

Todays's harvest, rhubarb, garlic and mint

Garlic

Pallets from our next-door neighbour have made good borders for the beds

Water from the brook

21st May

There has been no rain for few weeks now, our water butts are empty and the big LG water butts shared by all have also dried out.

I put some tomatoes plants in two day ago and I know they need a drink.
So I filled 2 empty milk containers with water from home. It wasn't enough...BUT, there is a brook not far from our garden.

Off to the brook we go with our watering cans.

Plenty of water in the brook

About twelve load of watering cans full of water from the brook did the job. The plants are now happy.
